英语里面一共有十六种时态，是四个“时”（现在时、过去时、将来时、过去将来时）与四个“态”（一般式、进行式、完成式、完成进行式）对应组合而成，如下图所示。
根据现行的学校教材安排，英语时态被分成下列三个阶段：
小学：五种初中：三种（兼顾复习小学所学的五种）高中：二种
重难点在于各种时态之间的区别，综合运用以及动词形式的记忆。
