马戛尔尼使团呈上的国书，由英文原本、拉丁文副本和中文副本组成。

我们现在只知道使团有两位翻译，都是来自那不勒斯中国学院（1732年由意大利传教士马国贤创立）的中国神甫，这两位神甫“都不懂英文，所有文书需先译成拉丁文，再由他们转译成中文”。

在此之前，就有跟随传教士前往欧洲的中国人，我们对他们的生平了解不多，假设他们在欧洲学习了英语，也应该是通过拉丁语的中介。

第二，中英之间的商业交流，在十九世纪之前，都不是通过标准英语来进行的。

现有文献显示，当时的中国人发明了一种中英混杂的语言，叫做”广州英语“或者”别琴英语”，后者显然是Pidgin English的音译。

这种将本民族语言与英语等欧洲语言混杂的现象，也出现在其他区域。

美国人William Hunter在《广州番鬼录》里指出：（广州英语）在英国人出现在广州很久之前已有它的根源。

十九世纪之前，即使某位传教士会说英语，也几乎没有什么理由，非得教中国人说英语。
